for a day like today when you don't want to think, you just want to feel.
Your Image Dances
When Your image dances into my heart
How many drunken images seethe along with it!
They whirl around Your image, Your moon-like splendor whirling at the center.
When an image brushes against You, it returns the sun’s rays like a mirror.
- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi
I Am the Mirror
Without destroying me, how could He pour me this treasure?
He had to throw me to the waves for Love's Sea to sweep me away.
What can the man of words guess of the sweetness of silence?
What can the arid heart know of always-flowing freshness?
I am the mirror, I am the mirror, I am not a man of words –
You'll know my spiritual state when your ears become gaze.
- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi
Spit at the Moon
Spit at the moon: the spit flies back in your eyes;
Try to tear His robe, it's your own that tatters.
A million million fools boil angrily in this Cauldron
Don't you know yet resignation is the way to Truth?
One day a hedgehog swallowed the tail of a snake,
Threw back its head, rolled itself into a ball.
And what did the snake do? Poor idiot!
It rammed itself against the hedgehog's spines
And screamed and died, riddled all over with wounds.
Had it had patience, it might have wriggled free.
Astounded
There is no angel so sublime, He whispered,
Who can be granted for one moment
What is granted you forever.
And I hung my head, astounded.
- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi
Longing for You
Longing for you savages me each moment
Let the world be my killer, not you
Don't kick the [wo]man you sent sprawling in the dust
Don't kill [her] you made, for the first time, alive.
- Jalal-ud-Din Rumi
