I was watching some clips of MJ performing at the Live in Brunei show and it seems so much different than Bucharest. I don't know if its just me thinking this or what but I swear its a different MJ than the one during the Bucharest show. At the end of Smooth Criminal the MJ did some figure skater skipping twirl which I thought was weird and during I Just Can't Stop Loving You the way he acted towards the woman singing, he never put his hand on her thigh but leaned on her shoulder.

It also sounded like the music during the Live in Brunei sounded off a bit or the MJ had a hard time singing like sort of being out of tune.

I didn't know where else to post this message. Tell me what you guys think.

Yeah, this entire concert looks off to me--- not that it isn't Michael, but he looks PISSED or way out of it: I was trying to look into the story of this concert at one point, but abandoned the effort; maybe time to look at it again. I understand it was a birthday celebration for prince of Brunei; paid something like $17 mil and amphitheater especially constructed for the occasion (maybe the entire cost was $17 mil)--looked at clips of all that at the time. I couldn't actually get through the entire performance, which is rare for me----I just felt tooooooooooooo uncomfortable; I really felt it had to do with how this performance came to be, but I never did (at the time) get down to the bottom of it. Anyone else know the story? I get anger from MJ.
  • Yes this is the concert. It just seemed a bit off to me like the way he interacted with the woman during I Just Can't Stop Loving You like he had more chemistry with Siedah Garrett during the Buchrest concert.
  • What is it happening to you guys?!?!?!? This is nobody but Michael Jackson performing as usual, the two only different things were that during " I just can't stop loving you" he never put his hand on the singer thigh but leaned on her shoulder because Brunei is a muslim country so the way Michael dances has a lack of grabbing crotch different from what we are used to, that's all but he is our beloved Michael.
  • If that's what you want to believe thats fine with me. But to me just all the feedback from all the monitors and everything else just seemed off or odd to me. If MJ was the perfectionist I've read about he would have made sure there would have not been any feedback from any monitors during the show, all performers do that in rehearsals and sound checks I'm sure he wouldn't have put up with all the noise from the feedback and the show just seemed like it was an impersonator show and the band that was playing sounded like karaoke music I've heard through youtube.

This concert in Brunei for the sultan's birthday was the last outing for the Dangerous tour format. Maybe Michael was itching to finish this and move onto the History tour with new set list and costumes, something fresh.
Considering this was July 1996 and History tour commenced in September of same year, it's something to consider.

It is very hot in Brunei.. notice Michael perspiring a lot, he started with less than usual makeup, and less eyemakeup, no lipstick.. there seems to have been sound/tech problems .. the hand on the girls shoulder also could be a respect for that culture. He may have been heat affected and/or feeling unwell .. L.O.V.E. x
  • @LOVESoldier28.....with all due respect if you say the man performing Live in Brunei is not Michael I am sorry to tell you that you don't know who is Michael Jackson at all, I respect your opinion but you are wrong honey, take a closer look you will see MJ in him maybe tired, thirsty, angry or whatever but no doubt is Michael.

I have watched this fully, thought about it and really do think it's all Michael. I actually like it a bit more than the Live in Bucharest dvd I have. It seems more real, less staged in some way.....maybe because he's sweating, less make-up etc? He does seem tired, but he seems so comfortable on stage and such the utter perfectionist...the show must go on mentality. I find it charming and endearing to his personality that he just gives so much on and off stage. This being said.....I am open to anything and will trust that even if it's not Michael, there's a reason for it. I just go with what Michael wants to show the world, trust in that.
A long time ago, someone else here was talking about different Michaels doing different concerts.......it's been talked about a long time. I just have to trust that Michael has things under control.

Blessings Always

That's 100% MJ. If this is the last Dangerous concert, maybe he looked pissed because he just heard he was falsely accused of molesting a young boy. I'd look pissed too.

Souza you it the nail on the head. Certainly reason enough for him to have not been in the best of spirits.

^^ @finfin, that just made me burst into tears - I've never heard that ending before. As you say, soul and passion. Thank you indeed (to MJ - and to you for posting it!)

    Royal concert in Brunei
Prior to the tour, Jackson performed a free concert at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei on 16 July 1996, attended by 60,000 throughout the park. The concert was in celebration of the fiftieth birthday of Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei and was attended by the Brunei royal family.
Much of the concert resembled Jackson's Dangerous World Tour, including his outfit, stage, and the setlist, keeping the details of the upcoming HIStory Tour a close secret. The concert also marked the debut live performance of "You Are Not Alone" and "Earth Song" as well as the last performances of "Jam", "Human Nature", "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "She's Out of My Life" at a Jackson concert. This concert was also among the last performances of "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" being sung fully live; most subsequent performances have been partially lip-synched.
The full concert was never broadcast on television but was a rare promo item in possession of private collectors; a high quality VHS copy has been leaked.

The changes
"Jam" had a shorter ending than usual.
"I Just Can't Stop Loving You" was performed with Marva Hicks rather than Siedah Garrett. In the middle of the song, Michael almost sang Marva's part. They sang an extra chorus.
"The Way You Make Me Feel" replaces "Workin' Day and Night".
"The Way You Make Me Feel" begins with the slow intro from the 1988 Grammys performance, which features the 1st verse, and the main instrumentation skips the 1st verse.
"You Are Not Alone" replaces "Will You Be There".
Billie Jean instrumentation is slower than Dangerous or Bad Tour, similar in style to the later HIStory Tour (which used a slightly down-pitched a cappella for playback), but sung live. The dance ending has a repeated snare sound like that from Why You Wanna Trip On Me, similar to the 1995 MTV Awards performance but without the bassline. Future performances of Billie Jean had this snare, but only in the beginning of the dance. Like the Dangerous and Bad Tours, Jackson does not beatbox before singing the final line and throwing the hat.
In "Beat It", Michael sang the wrong lyrics in the second verse. Also, he threw his jacket at the end, which he did in HIStory Tour.
The 1995 MTV Video Music Awards version of "Dangerous" replaces the 1993 American Music Awards version.
Michael wore the golden shin pads in "Black or White" instead of the black ones.
"Heal the World" wasn't performed, but would be present in HIStory Tour.
"Man in the Mirror" ended with a curtain call, instead of the Rocket Man finale.
"Earth Song" was performed as an encore.
The concert included the final live performances by Jackson of "Human Nature", "Jam", "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" and "She's Out of My Life". "Human Nature", "Jam" and "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" were later rehearsed for the 2009–2010 This Is It concert series, while "She's Out of My Life" was rehearsed for the first of Jackson's 1999 MJ and Friends concerts in Seoul, but later removed from the setlist. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIStory_World_Tour

Mar. 1, 1996 he was quizzed by lawyers about sexual abuse of boys.

Truly heartbreaking.
Thanks for the post......

@loveunited....maybe this helps you understand whatever it is you saw that made you sense anger from him? I guess I just saw something different :icon_e_sad:

Blessings
