Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter, 13, dies in car crash
NELSON Mandela's 13-year-old great-granddaughter has been killed in a car crash on the way home from a World Cup kick-off concert.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation said Zenani Mandela died in a one-car accident in Johannesburg.
Zenani Mandela, the grandchild of Zindzi Mandela, was traveling with Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela when their car overturned on the M1 near the Selby off-ramp outside the Johannesburg city center.
Winnie - Nelson’s second wife and mother of his two daughters Zindzi and Zeni - was taken to hospital but police could not confirm if she was injured.
The driver was arrested and police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
The Mandela Foundation released a statement, saying: "The family has asked for privacy as they mourn this tragedy."
Zenani was the eldest child of Zoleka Seakamela and one of Nelson Mandela's nine great grandchildren. She had celebrated her 13th birthday on June 9.
Nelson Mandela was South Africa's first black president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election and served from 1994 to 1999.
He was sentenced to life in prison in 1962 after he was convicted of sabotage and other charges.
He served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. After his release in 1990, Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy in 1994.
Mandela has received more than 250 awards over four decades, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
Nelson Mandela is scheduled to give tonight's World Cup opening ceremony in South Africa its signature moment.
The 91-year-old is frail, and earlier, his grandson Nkosi Zwelivelile said he was well enough to attend but expected to be there for only 15 minutes.
"He will come and greet the fans before he retires to his home," Zwelivelile said.
"Were trying to see how long he will stay at the stadium. At least 10 to 15 minutes."
A global audience of billions is expected to tune into the opening ceremony.
