Appeal to Project for Excellence in Journalism?

I was thinking of ways to send an effective message to the media (since I doubt the effectiveness of online petitions), and the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) came to mind. Here it is: <!-- m -->http://www.journalism.org/<!-- m -->
It is very prestigious. (I took a journalism class at Harvard and this project was discussed. Tom Rosenstiel, A Director there, co-authored a book which is used in journalism schools. You can find that info, and read about the PEJ people, here: <!-- m -->http://www.journalism.org/about_pej/staff<!-- m -->)

PEJ publishes studies on how various issues are treated in the (American) media. You can find those studies here: <!-- m -->http://www.journalism.org/research_and_analysis/Studies<!-- m -->
These studies are used by students in journalism schools, and I believe it is important that PEJ make a study on the treatment of Michael Jackson in the press (even if it's only limited to the coverage of the 2005 trial). I haven't seen a PEJ study on Michael Jackson, though some old articles on Jackson are posted here:
<!-- m -->http://www.journalism.org/node/108<!-- m -->
(under the title "Michael Jackson, King of Paparazzi")
It would also be interesting to see a study on celebrity in general, and the impact of the paparazzi/24-hr news cycle/soundbite culture.

I would suggest that we write, individually or collectively, to PEJ to propose a study of Michael Jackson and the industry-wide failures with respect to MJ. The PEJ contact info is here: <!-- m -->http://www.journalism.org/about_pej/contact_us<!-- m -->

I really think the MJ case should be studied in journalism schools, because it casts too large a shadow on ALL media. (It's not just the tabloids!) I'm not sure about the best way to go about this, so I'll open this up for discussion. Mo & Souza, I'd like to know your opinion. I think the ideal thing to do would be to mail a letter signed by lots of people, but don't know if that's feasible... If not, maybe we can still send a collective message somehow? I wouldn't mind drafting it if needed.
