Individual Frames From Janet's Performance at the VMAs

I have uploaded a video on youtube that is all of individual frames taken from Janet Jackson's performance at the Video Music Awards (VMAs).
There are many comments on this video both for and against whether this is Michael Jackson actually on the platform behind and above Janet and in front of the video screen. Some people say that the image is to big to be him, is a hologram, or a projection of video captured from the original scream video. Others believe that it is him actually performing at the VMAs.

Link to the entire video made from individual frames of the VMA broadcast:
[youtube:f3kmc12b]

1. If it is a hologram why wasn't that ever announced as being part of the VMA production?
2. Why was this "image" popping in and out so quickly throughout the entire performance and not noticed by many people when the VMAs first aired?
3.If it is a projection, how was this projected on to the platform in front of the video screen and not actually on the video screen?
3. How is it that we can see this "image" walk across the platform near the end of Janet's performance (as the platform is being lowered below the stage)?

I would just like to add, my understanding of the current technology of Holograms is that they are stationary. They can appear to move but with in one spot in space. The hologram projector can move to reproduce the hologram in a new space but the technology to create an actual continuously moving hologram (as would be required to show someone walking across a catwalk/platform) has not be fully realized yet.

"The holographic video project is developing a real-time imaging system that can render and display computer generated holograms at near-video rates. So far, we have demonstrated two prototype displays: the Mark-I and the Mark-II. The Mark-1 display is capable of rendering full color 25x25x25mm images with a 15 degree view zone at rates around 20 frames per second. The Mark-II display provides 150x75x150mm images with a 36 degree view zone at rates of around 2.5 frames per second. Our ongoing research examines methods to reduce computation time, ways to generate more realistic images, hologram compression and encoding schemes, new specialized hardware for optical modulation and computation, and new display architectures."

Maybe it isn't just an "image" after all. The following pictures are just a few frames as I captured Michael in about 125 frames that are about 3 seconds apart. It is very hard to extract each second in the time line without a better program.

Appearing on the platform in smoke, in front of the video screen and not on it!

On the platform:

Walking across the platform near the end of the performance. Notice the small white patch on his chest gets larger as he walks:

  • A still from a different video of the VMAs. Is that a woman's face being projected on to his chest? and if an image is being projected on to his chest, how could he also just be a projected image?

    Here a couple screen shots I took from another youtube video .The quality is not as good as frames previously posted but those have been extracted and that is really time consuming. These screen shots are just before Janet dances with the Michael projected on the big screen.

    oh wow!! I've never seen the actual frames, just the video as a whole...I'm shocked!! What kind of image walks onto the stage, before he can be seen?I mean, an image just appears where it's supposed to ..it doesn't wander around, to get to its place... <!-- s:o -->:o<!-- s:o -->

    The hologram is gigantic. Michael´s size is much bigger than the dancers.

    Also, to find if was Michael on real time we need to look at his face. Scream was made long ago and he had a particular look on his face.
  • i thought it was strange at the time and i couldnt quite put my finger on it, i dont think it is a hologram i think its the real thing , or maybe a double lol

    I just watched it again (I have it recorded on VHS) After much pausing, rewinding, etc. I would have to say I have my doubts about a hologram, but I don't have many about it being the real thing.

    Looks like if he would be behind a magnifier lense!!!

    wait....what about that face on his chest?

    Is there a way to see this face? to find out if is the MJ 2009?
  • So... I'm not crazy ?:D I've posted a thread on the other forum called" Is it really a Hollogram?" lol and the most answers were that it was just a frame from the real videoclip of scream <!-- s:D -->:D<!-- s:D --> lol.. now I see this post.. I'm more convinced I wasn't going crazy and I really had something there! LOL thanks for sharing <!-- s:lol: -->:lol:<!-- s:lol: -->

    Holly Cow!!!!! <!-- s:shock: -->:shock:<!-- s:shock: -->

    Do I see a guy behind?? just going towards the stage where we see the "hologram"? <!-- s:shock: -->:shock:<!-- s:shock: -->

    What is this? please, tell me I am interpretating wrong all I am seeing, please <!-- s:shock: -->:shock:<!-- s:shock: -->
  • I really don't want to upset anyone here and maybe you can show me if I am wrong but I have watched that performance over and over and if you watch the video to scream and slow it down you will the EXACT same footage. It just looks like it is large enough to truly be him because of the size of the screen. Please debunk me if I am wrong because I would love to see this differently!

    I have to admit this is a bit weird. I hadn't seen this before.

    I don't understand the image of Michael on the platform. If this is not him, how can his image be projected onto the platform like that? Also where is that image, and the image of him walking across the platform from?

    Sorry, I really cannot understand how this could be done!

  • All I can say is "hmmm..." -- definitely food for thought-- real or not, hologram or not, projected or not?

    this really does seem to be some new, exclusive technology.
    it's all very confusing, but how epic would it be if he was up there??

  • I wish we could compare the actual video and the vmas performance up aginst one another to compare. cuz not even Michael is gonna move exactly simutaneously with the music. so if the there compared and one is a bit different from the other then we'll know if he was there or not

    Why would they go throught the trouble of have a hologram or impersonator and barely draw attention to it? CNN made a big deal about their hologram. Why wouldn't they? Why bother with an impersonator and then barely highlight them?

    This is weird. <!-- s:? -->:?<!-- s:? -->

    This is a good suggestion <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) -->
  • I hate to burst anyone's bubble but I think in order to do a hologram, a person has to be there for the image to be projected onto. Like when they had Celine Dion and "Elvis" performing together on American Idol, someone was physically on the stage dressed as Elvis. If someone can confirm or debunk this, please feel free but I think that would explain the person walking across the platform.

    Here explains very well how a hologram works. Has picture explanation.

    During their election night coverage, CNN projected "holographic" images of remote interviewees into CNN's New York newsroom. CNN Senior Vice President David Bohrman reported that they have placed 44 cameras and 20 computers in each of their remote locations to capture and record three-dimensional images of the remote interviewees. The data was used to create the illusion that the interviewee is in the studio with the CNN correspondents.

    Someone was there at the ama´s but mayb was a random guy, not Michael.

    So, when I understood these articles right, at the VMA's if it was a hologram, Michael ( or another guy) had to be there to be projected as a hologram?

    Very peculiarly I do not know a hologram? If that a hologram is then it is really well, however, why this was not mentioned? Did it become? <!-- s:?: -->:?:<!-- s:?: --> <!-- s:? -->:?<!-- s:? -->
