WASHINGTON Oct 21 (Reuters) - A powerful magnitude 6.9 quake struck off Mexico's Baja California on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.6, was centered in the Gulf of California, 65 miles (105 km) south of Los Mochis in the state of Sinaloa on the mainland. It was very shallow, just 6.2 miles (10 km) below the seabed.
The Pacific Tsunami center said the quake had not triggered a tsunami but could cause local waves.

Just minutes ago the USGS reported an earthquake registering a magnitude of 6.9 located at 24.843°N, 109.171°W, which is in the southern portion of the Gulf of California. The quake was approximately 6.2 miles beneath the surface, and occurred at 11:53 AM local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake took place in an area which is the following distances from the given locations below:
- 105 km (65 miles) S (191°) from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico
- 106 km (66 miles) SSW (210°) from Gabriel Leyva Solano, Sinaloa, Mexico
- 107 km (66 miles) SSW (199°) from Juan Jose Rios, Sinaloa, Mexico
- 1147 km (713 miles) SE (136°) from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico
Thus far no injuries or major damage has been reported from the quake.
