Hey guys, I'm sorry if this was posted before. I've done a search but nothing came up, so I'm here creating this thread.

The song "Behind The Mask" is actually the same version as this. He just changed part of the lyrics.

Greg Phillinganes' version:

  • Greg Phillinganes is an active session keyboardist in Los Angeles, California. Phillinganes was discovered by Stevie Wonder who heard a cassette of instrumental renditions of his own songs done by Phillinganes. Wonder recruited Phillinganes for his Wonderlove band, where Phillinganes stayed from 1976 to 1981.

In 1981, he released his first solo album, Significant Gains. While the album itself was not very successful, he did manage to score a minor R&B hit with "Baby, I Do Love You." Three years later, he released his follow-up album Pulse, which featured another minor hit (and perhaps his best-known solo hit), a cover of Yellow Magic Orchestra's song "Behind the Mask" (with additional lyrics written by Michael Jackson). This single was much more successful on the Dance music charts. When he later joined Eric Clapton's backing band, Phillinganes would introduce the tune to Clapton, who covered it on his 1986 August album. Amidst his solo recordings and touring with Clapton throughout the 1980s, he became well-known as a prominent session musician for a multitude of different artists, performing on many hit albums of the time. His session work has continued into the present.

In addition to Stevie Wonder, Greg Phillinganes has worked and toured with other notable musicians such as the Bee Gees, Anita Baker, Eric Clapton, Donald Fagen, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson, Richard Marx, Paul McCartney and Stevie Nicks among others, He was also the musical director for Michael Jackson's Bad & Dangerous concert tours. During 2004, Phillinganes acted as a replacement for David Paich on tour with the band Toto. In 2005, he joined the band and set to helping Toto with their new album. He continued to tour as member of Toto until the band broke up in 2008. When Toto reformed in 2010, Phillinganes was not part of the lineup.

  • I recently saw Greg Philiganes in concert with Herbie Hancock! This guy has a really powerful voice!! And is a very sweet person! Herbie mentioned that Greg was working with Michael... but, unfortunately, no clues at all... <!-- s:? -->:?<!-- s:? -->

Sorry, I think you mean that Michael wrote some lyrics in the Greg Phillinganes version right? <!-- s:? -->:?<!-- s:? -->

Quincy Jones heard Yellow Magic Orchestra’s version during the Thriller sessions, and brought it to Michael Jackson, Michael had recorded the song, adding an extra melody line and a few extra lyrics. Legal battles prevented the song to be released on Jackson's sixth studio album, Thriller, and remained unreleased for over 20 years[1].

However, in 2010, as a part of Sony Music's 10-album recording deal with the Estate of Michael Jackson, the song was announced to be released on the posthumous album of Jackson, titled Michael. Singer Shanice Wilson provides background vocals on the song.[12] The track also has audience noises from the Dangerous Tour concert in Bucharest.

Thank you, VeryLittleSusie! You answered two questions that I had in your post:
    1) Who is the incredible woman singing at the end of the song?
    2) Was that the Bucharest HBO audience in the background? (I own that DVD and I thought it possibly was)

I absolutely ADORE this song! It might be favorite on the album! I can't get that incredible hook, "He-eh-eee-eee-ee, He-eh-eee-eee-ee" out of my freakin' head!

    LOVE YOU, MIKE!

Trivia: One of the writers of this song, Ryuichi Sakamoto, has a song from a movie called "The Sheltering Sky". This song was once the basis and first demo for "Stranger in Moscow". =]
