"She asked me to do it. She told me nobody else could do it." Bush thought he would merely visit the mortuary in Forest Lawn, California, and hand over the clothes, which the family had chosen. But the Jackson clan had other plans. :icon_eek: :animal0017:

"The mortician told us that the family want you to be here because there's things they don't want anyone to see," [...] "They brought me and Karen (Jackson's make-up artist) into the room. "I was glad that I got to experience that in a way -- it was like a vision", he remembers. :icon_eek: :animal0017:
[ . . . ]
Those moments extended back to the mid- Eighties [...] and their professional and personal relationship deepened. "Over time I considered him one of my best friends,"
[ . . . . ]
Jackson would tell Bush to "never let 'em see my legs. Because if my fans could see my legs I'd lose all of 'em". :icon_exclaim: :icon_question: :icon_eek: :icon_question: :animal0017:

"Even though he was a dancer he wasn't a sexual being," Bush recalls. She said, 'You have to get here, now'. I got out of the car in such a hurry that I left the engine running and all of the clothes from the This Is It tour were in the back of the car unlocked. [...] The hardest part was that about 20 minutes after they told us they started ripping down the stage," Bush remembers. "I mean, I know it's business, they need the next guy to come in, but it shouldn't have been that fast." :icon_exclaim: :icon_question: :icon_eek: :animal0017:
[ . . . .]

In the meantime, Bush contents himself with the knowledge that he is impervious to conspiracy theories. :suspect: "I've heard the talk -- there are those fans who think he's alive, that he's hanging out somewhere with Elvis," he says. Continuing on from the theme of this thread, Michael Bush is now about to publish his book and the exhibition of his collection is in London

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/10/12/entertainment-us-books-michaeljackson-co-idUSBRE89B0V820121012

Jewels, pearls, and plain Florsheim shoes for Michael Jackson

?m=02&d=20121012&t=2&i=662796211&w=460&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=CBRE89B14OY00

- Michael Jackson was the ultimate entertainer, who oversaw all the details of his shows, from the slick choreography to the rhinestones and pearls carefully hand sewn onto his elaborate costumes, his longtime costume designer says.

As much as music and dance characterized the pop superstar, the late Jackson was also known for his style, from military outfits and regalia, to jewel-encrusted gloves, fedora hats and intricately beaded jackets.

In a new book, "The King of Style: Dressing Michael Jackson," Michael Bush, the man who designed and made Jackson's stage costumes for 25 years until the pop star's death in 2009, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the iconic superstar and the development of his signature style.

"The clothes had to work around the way he was performing," Bush told Reuters in a telephone interview. "He wanted his outfits, or his costumes, to be as entertaining on a hanger as they were on him. It was an added layer of refinement and detail that he was projecting to his audience."

Everything Jackson wore had a focus and was an extension of what he was doing on stage, with dance playing a pivotal role in the designs. He favored rhinestones and beading because they reflected the stage lighting.

Function, fitness and comfort were essential, with neckties and fringes forbidden because they could be grabbed by fans.

"It was very contrived. It was very thought out," said Bush, adding that as the stadiums got bigger, Jackson's pants got shorter and shorter, the better to see his rhinestone socks.

"Michael was concerned that the people in the back row paid just as much to see him perform as the people in the front, so no one got cheated out of the entertainment he was projecting, because everyone could see what he was doing," Bush said.

MAN OF PARADOXES

Each of the 800 to 900 costumes Bush and his partner Dennis Tompkins, who died last year, made for Jackson were over-the-top, skin tight, flashy pop-star creations. Many are shown in detailed photographs in the book, along with sketches and performance photos.

Still, away from the spotlight, Jackson preferred more casual, loose-fitting corduroy shirts, black cotton pants with front pleats, and loafers.

And despite all his fame and wealth, and gifts of expensive designer shoes, Jackson always performed in Florsheim shoes, which can be purchased in most U.S. malls.

"He taught himself to dance in Florsheims. They were comfortable and were what he had worn as a child star," Bush explained in the book, to be published October 23.

Jackson's style evolved from his military outfits, featuring taut lines and embellishments and designed with his female audience in mind. These were followed by a more rebellious, edgy look with leather jackets, including one with small spoons and forks dangling, like military medals, across the front.

"The first layer was the jacket, then we put the zipper underneath that and the buckles from the "Bad" album look, and then we asked: 'How can we make this larger than life on stage?'"

Strobe lights and electric jackets were the next step. Each album had its own look, which evolved from the look preceding it.

Perhaps Bush and Tompkins's greatest achievement was Jackson's "lean shoes," which were eventually patented. He first performed his "lean move," leaning forward at a 45-degree angle in the short film "Smooth Criminal" in 1987, thanks to behind-the-scenes magic.

Bush and Tompkins were tasked with developing shoes that would allow Jackson to perform the move before a live audience, without falling over. It took Tompkins a month but he devised shoes that bolted to the floor and worked perfectly on stage.

Although Jackson claimed not to have a favorite costume, Bush said the one the pop star liked the most, and in which he was laid to rest, was the pearl and bead encrusted white military jacket that he wore when his sister Janet handed him a Grammy award in 1993.

There wasn't time to track down the original jacket when the Jackson family contacted Bush and Tompkins and asked them to choose his final outfit, so they made a copy.

"Michael was a man of many paradoxes, most of which we were able to represent in the clothes we designed: Rigid military cuts that were also elastic and moveable; rebellious regalia, fit for army commanders, worn over the heart of a gentle man; bedazzled embellishments adorning a man blessed with a quiet humility; one of a kind, handcrafted clothes worn with aged, scuffed Florsheim shoes," Bush said in the book.

Jackson, 50, died in Los Angeles in June 2009 from an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol, which he was taking to help him sleep. His personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, is serving a four-year prison term for involuntary manslaughter.

Interesting that Mr Bush is now quite happy to bring attention to Michael's burial clothes, where previously it was a secret! hmmm :suspect:

File photo of the clothes that Michael Jackson was laid to rest in, following his death in 2009

http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-rt-cbre89b1dqb00.jpg-20121012,0,7290515.photo

72860500.jpg

Plus here is the wonderful video from the 1993 Grammy Awards with Janet - many messages here, for sure

/>

Brings all this up again... :icon_e_wink:

20/20 interview with Michael Bush, Karen Faye, etc. aired on June 25, 2010. One year after the death and Michael Bush is still saying the family wants to keep Michael's burial outfit "private"

When Michael Bush was asked what kind of outfit he dressed MJ's corpse in - At 3:04 "The only thing I can say at this point, because the family wants to keep it private..."

At 3:16 "There had to have been a glove." "No, he didn't want that."

Link to interview video - ABC 20-20 -- Michael Jackson 'After Life' Pt 6 of 11 - YouTube

Latoya's interview with Barbara Walters aired September 11, 2009 One WEEK after the "burial"

At 7:05 - Can you tell us what Michael was wearing?

"He was dressed in all white pearl beads going across, draped across. A beautiful big gold belt. Like ... Like a belt that you win being a boxer," she said. "Full makeup. ... His hair was done beautifully, his makeup was done beautifully."

At 7:36 - Was Michael buried wearing one white glove?

"No, he was wearing two black leather gloves. He did have a white glove though, but he wasn't wearing it... it was in the casket."

Link to interview video - La Toya Jackson on 20/20 - September 11, 2009 - Part 3 of 3 - YouTube

http://abcnews.go.com/2020/MichaelJackson/la-toya-jackson-grief-michael-jackson-barbara-walters/story?id=8529898#.UAiOEaP4LB4

Yeah, this is gross. I remember asking Karen on twitter why her and Bush's story about gloves does not math with what La Toya says, she told me to ask Bush about it and banned me as if I care much. :icon_lol:
Now connecting inconsistent info with signing paper...... ("They brought me and Karen (Jackson's make-up artist) into the room. They made us sign papers saying that we can't sue them, because seeing a dead body is traumatic.), makes sense why we have 2 different stories about glove. I assume they signed paper for not suing them....for something else other than just seeing deady body trauma; maybe to keep mouth shot and someting like that.

Now we learn that they made a COPY of white military costume? Why would they copy the costume if man is dead anyway and will not be in need of it? In which one MJ was "buried"- in copied costume or original?

I wasn't aware that Michael Bush had decided to auction off the pieces....
http://www.juliensauctions.com/auctions/2012/tompkins-and-bush/index.html

Julien’s Auctions is proud to announce the auction of The King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s, wardrobe items and ephemera from the collection of designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush.
These pieces have not been seen since Jackson wore them on stage and in his videos. These very special items are offered for sale for the first time on December 2, 2012 at the Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery as part of our annual Icons & Idols auction.

The exhibit and auction include the designs created by Michael Jackson’s long time costume designers Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, which are also featured in the highly anticipated illustrated book by Michael Bush, THE KING OF STYLE: Dressing Michael Jackson, which will be published by Insight Editions and available October 30, 2012. The collection of Jackson clothing and wardrobe offered for sale, and seen in the book, showcases Michael Jackson’s love of fashion and huge impact on popular culture. Many of the items featured in the book will be included in the auction with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas and Guide Dogs of America in Los Angeles.

Sale highlights include a 30th Anniversary of Madison Square Garden show signed prototype helmet which was wired to illuminate a row of battery powered lights below the visor. The helmet is signed in black marker to designer Michael Bush and states “To Bush Love Michael Jackson,” and Jackson’s “Scream” video costume which includes a pair of black spandex pants with matching long sleeve shirt and mesh tuck strap. Each costume piece is marked on the interior in gold marker “2/2” or “2/2 M.J.J,” indicating that two costumes were created for Jackson’s famous video shoot. Michael Jackson’s Captain EO white spandex shirt featuring ribbed neck, zip closure and a rainbow motif is also included as well as the King of Pop’s Awards Ceremony jacket which is a black wool jacket embellished with red armband, gold tone metal floral buttons, metallic embroidered crown patch at chest and buckled leather straps at right shoulder. Jackson wore this jacket when he attended the 3rd annual Soul Train Awards in 1989 where he was honored with the Sammy Davis, Jr. Heritage Award, the Heritage Award for Career Achievement and awards for his single and video for “Man in the Mirror.”

There is no doubt that Michael Jackson was a global fashion icon as well as award winning and beloved musician. His wardrobe dictated many of the styles throughout the last few decades. Jackson played a very intimate role in the designs and completion of every costume and piece of clothing he wore both on stage and in his personal life. Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush shared a very personal and close 25 year relationship with the artist which is rich in story-telling that runs throughout this collection, as well as detailed in the upcoming book.

A portion of the proceeds of the auction will benefit two charities, Guide Dogs of America (GuideDogsofAmerica.org) and Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas (www.nah.org).

EXHIBITION AND AUCTION SCHEDULE
EXHIBITIONS
South America The Museo De La Moda in Santiago, Chile
Friday, May 18th – Wednesday, June 27th, 2012
Ireland
Museum of Style Icons In Newbridge Silverware Visitor Centre
Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland
Tuesday, July 3rd – Sunday, July 29th

London, United Kingdom Friday, October 5th – Saturday, November 4th
The Street at Westfield, Stratford City
Stratford Place, Stratford, E20 1EJ
Olympic Park
London United Kingdom
Tokyo, Japan Thursday, October 18th – Monday, November 12th
1-1-2 Oshiage sumida-ku Tokyo,
Sky-Tree Town Soramachi 5F Space 634
Japan, #131-0045
United States of America Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills Gallery
Monday, November 19th – Friday, November 29th

LIVE AUCTION Sunday, December 2nd, 2012
2:00 p.m.
Julien's Auctions
9665 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 150
Beverly Hills, California 90210
Registering to Bid
Registration is required to bid in this live auction and can be done in person at the exhibition and auction, or online before the sale at the JuliensAuctions.com Registration page to bid by phone, proxy or in person, or online at JuliensLive.com to bid live online, or by calling (310) 836-1818.

Placing Bids
There are four ways to bid in this sale:

Bid through Julien's Auctions Online Live in Real Time at JuliensLive.com.
Place bids in the room by attending the auction.
Bid over the telephone through an auction house representative, who sits in the room and conveys the bid to the auctioneer.
Enter Absentee bids. I think it will be interesting to see who bids on what. Would places like Hard Rock Cafe or some Vegas casino museum bid?
Or would this primarily be for private collectors of memorabilia. I think it's interesting who buys these types of things. I don't
know if I would, if I could. Maybe a glove or fedora, or one of the really cool jackets (love those).....but spandex pants? Really?
I do have one piece of cool memorabilia though...bought at Disney World years ago.....a piece of Clark Gable's china.
Random, I know. I went back to the same place this past summer, they had a couple of signed photos from Michael and from
The Jackson 5. Perhaps Disney would bid on the Captain EO stuff, to display at the parks? That might be cool..........

Blessings!

I would think that anyone who buys MJ things would be paying big money, displaying it proudly, and his name would get out there in a thousand spread out places for the world to be wowed with the incomparable love hundreds of millions have for him, different that any other adored person.

Yeah, I do wonder if Gaga has a part in this, at all...
  • Couple of thoughts...

1. I'll withhold my opinion of Gaga having possession of these items until I can see if she acts respectably with them. Any desecration (ie: turning one of his jackets into the latest version of a whacked out meat ensemble) would arouse my immediate wrath. :icon_evil:

2. Exactly HOW is it that the Bush collection included lots of things from the J5 days??? :suspect: Bush never even met Michael until they were both 25 or so the story goes. Some of the items offered were used at least a good decade before if I recall. Makes you wonder...at least it made me confused.
  • Just now getting to read this lol. I think that Michael Bush knows something. Anyway, I wonder why he really left the car engine running? Or for whom did he leave it running for? something to think about. and what stage did the they take down? I thought he was at the hospital?
