UPDATE: Martin reports that Marie's manager told him that Marie's daughter found her dead in her home today, and that she suffered a seizure last month. To follow the story, head over to Martin's Twitter feed.
According to Roland Martin, R&B singer Teena Marie has passed away at the age of 54. Martin cites Marie's manager, Mike Gardner.
RadioFacts.com was the first to report the news; they sent along the link toPhiladelphia radio station WDAS.
Born Marie Christine Brockert, Teena Marie rose to prominence in the late 70s and 80s, striking a musical and personal partnership with funk legend Rick James. She released 13 studio albums, six of which went platinum on the US R&B chart. Two of her albums went platinum, and six altogether were gold.
Marie's biggest hit came in 1984 with her single 'Lovergirl,' which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She was with Epic Records from 1983 - 1990.
So Motown, then Epic...sounds familiar...
Plus, her seventh album was called Emerald City! <!-- s:shock: --><!-- s:shock: -->
When I heard PAIN MEDICATIONS ADDICTION I am like......wow. I know our beloved MJ battled them at one point in his life. BUt......How do people get addicted to them? I mean how do they make you feel ? Sleepy right?????? <!-- s --><!-- s --> We are losing too many to this type of thing seriously.

I was on a low dose last year. They made me tingly and knocked me out for the first 5 days or so. After that, they actually made me jittery and kept me up. So, I stopped taking them. Maybe that's how people get hooked. Maybe they start taking more to get that initial feeling? I don't know.
All it took was 2 nights of being up most of the night for me to say I'm done. My pain had subsided quite a bit those 2 nights they made me jittery. So, maybe they only work when you are in fact in severe pain? I don't know.
A little story: On Christmas Day I listened to one of Teena Marie's albums and this song, "If I Were A Bell". I listened to a real album, not CD, on my new phonograph that Santa brought me. <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) --> It's one of those phonographs they make now with turntable for 33's, 45's and 78's (!) a real radio -- with dial (no digital), CD player, cassette player and hook-up for ipod. I have tons of albums and 45's and I still love the sound of a record on vinyl. I have so many J5 and MJ albums including the first original, Diana Ross presents...
Anyway, the first album I played was Teena's as I just happened to pull it from my cabinet first -- totally serendipitous but I love the album. I was wondering what had happened to Teena. I'm so sorry that this is the answer. God bless you, Teena.
I'm praying for her daughter and family.

RIP Teena and Rick. <!-- s:( -->:(<!-- s:( -->
My all time favorite song.

As we previously reported, Tina suffered a grand mal seizure a month before her death. Close family friends tell us Tina has suffered other seizures, but the grand mal shook her up badly. We're told she had broken two ribs after falling during that seizure.
We're told the L.A. County Coroner's Office found diazepam -- an antiseizure drug -- at Teena's home, but friends say she had stopped taking the medicine because of side effects and began taking herbal remedies instead.
Friends also tell TMZ ... Teena was so scared of having another grand mal seizure she would have someone sleep next to her at night.
Friends say on Saturday night someone slept in the same room with Teena and left in the morning. Teena was talking with her bodyguard at around 11:30 AM. She went back to bed in the early afternoon -- no one was with her when she slept. Teena's daughter checked in with her at around 1 PM and Teena was fine.
But at around 3 PM, Teena's daughter checked in with her again, and found her unresponsive.
The Coroner has said signs point to death from natural causes. But "natural causes" could be death from a seizure.
